Ukrainian Protests Result in 2 Deaths

A clash between Ukrainian protesters and riot police on Hrushevsky Street has resulted in death. Officials have corroborated the deaths of two protesters, one of whom has been identified as Sergei Nigoyan, a 20 year old ethnic Armenian protester who came to Kyiv from Dnipropetrovsk in early December to join the opposition. On Wednesday the 22nd of January 2014, police stormed a protest camp. Protesters tried to fend them off using stones and petrol bombs but the riot police fought with rubber bullets and stun grenades. "Today they are preparing to clear us out of the Maidan," Vitali Klitschko, an opposition leader, announced. "We must do all we can to stop them clearing us out." Protesters took to the streets after President Yanukovych backed out of a landmark treaty with the EU in late November of 2013. "You, Mr President, have the opportunity to resolve this issue. Early elections will change the situation without bloodshed and we will do everything to achieve that." stated Klitschko. Medics at the site reported a third activist also died after falling from the top of the Dynamo Football stadium but Natalia Vishnevska, a spokesperson from Kiev's health department, claimed that the man survived and is now in hospital care.
